Man, what a great weekend! We’ve been blessed with great weather for the entire weekend. Monday was a bank holiday here in Britain. What is the bank holiday celebrating, you ask? As far as we can tell, nothing… absolutely nothing. It’s simply a holiday where people are given the day off… and I’m kind of okay with that. 🙂
So our friend Colleen arrived on Sunday, and we immediately whisked her away to the countryside!
First, off to Stonehenge!
Then, afterwards we went to Salisbury Cathedral. Colleen is a lawyer and I love history, so we were both excited to see the oldest copy of the Magna Carta, only one of 4 still in existence. To see a document that is one of the most important documents in human history, up there with the American Declaration of Independence and Luther’s 95 Theses. It shook the world, and it’s amazing that we can still see it. Salisbury Cathedral is such an awesome (in the literal meaning of the word) cathedral, and the history contained there is remarkable.
Now in multimedia form!
That evening, we rented a cottage in the Cotswold, the area surrounding Bath. We took a nice long walk through the country and ended up in a village pub where we were probably the only Americans who have been there. Our first questions to bartender, was ‘Wait, where are we?’ 🙂
Today, we went straight back into tourist mode! We went to Bath and saw the Roman Baths, dating back to over 2000 years ago! They’re wonderfully preserved, and the hot water still bubbles up through the ruins.
Afterwards, we visited Bath Abbey standing next door. Having seen Salisbury Cathedral the day before, we couldn’t help but think, ‘Yeah, it’s a beautiful building…’ and feel a bit unappreciative of it. We were spoiled, I guess. Still, we were glad to see it.
Fantastic weekend… we’re exhausted now, but we had a blast! We’d love to do it again! Until then, take care friends, and we hope to hear from you soon!
